With close to 600 classes under her belt since starting with us in August 2015, Kristen is truly an AUXO OG! While making her health and wellness a priority over these last four years, Kristen has become a huge part of our family, and we can't wait for you to learn more about our newest Barre Bride-to-be!
Q: Where are you from, and how long have you been in Gainesville?
A: I am originally from New Orleans, Louisiana; but I have been in Florida since I was about eight years old. I have been in Gainesville for ten years, ever since moving here for undergrad.
Q: What's your favorite Barre/AUXO-themed shirt?
A: My favorite barre tank is currently a tie between by 500 class tank and the one that says "Barre Bride" - both commemorate exciting milestones!
Q: Tell us something fun about yourself/what you do when you're not at AUXO?
A: When I'm not at barre I am either working in the ICU, going to clinical, or studying for my acute care DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) degree. However, in my rare free moments I am also a big fan of reading, retail therapy, and collecting funny nursing memes on social media!
Q: Was your first Barre class what you expected? Why or why not?
A: My first barre class confused me a little. I remember thinking, "These moves are all so tiny and simple - but everything burns. Why does it burn?!"
Q: Why did you decide to continue with AUXO Fitness after your free week by investing in an unlimited membership? And what has kept you coming for so many years?
A: I've always thought that health/wellness is something that is definitely worth investing in. So, an unlimited membership at AUXO is 100% worth it to me because it's effective, fun, and doesn't feel like torture - so I will actually GO! It's so much better than trying to drag myself to the gym. Also, I love the warm, supportive community that Brinn and the rest of the AUXO staff have so carefully cultivated! It's so simple, but I think one of the smartest business practices that Brinn used right from the get-go was being super intentional about learning every one of her client's names so she could greet them when they walk in :)
Q: What makes this workout different from other exercises you have experienced?
A: One of the things that makes barre unique is that it is so adaptable to any level of skill or physical fitness. If I'm really tired one day or otherwise not feeling 100%, I can still go to class and modify the moves to whatever I'm feeling up to! Then on all of the other days, I can push myself to get in a really challenging workout! It is definitely one of the things in life where "you get out of it what you put in." I also love that it makes me feel so fit and strong, but it's low-impact, so I never feel like I'm hurting my body or wearing out my joints like I would in some other workouts.
Q: What is your favorite Barre/yoga move? Why?
A; I think I enjoy glute work the most - especially pretzels. Who doesn't like snack time?
Q: What results have you noticed after doing Barre/BodyFlow/Yoga consistently?
A: Since starting barre, I have definitely noticed myself become more toned and more flexible!
Q: Have you experienced any benefits from Barre that have affected you not just physically, but mentally, too?
A: Absolutely! Consistently going to barre makes me feel healthy and confident. I especially like going to classes first thing in the morning because it's such a great, productive start to my day.
Q: What keeps you motivated to continue coming to Barre?
A: Part of what keeps me coming to barre is the logic of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" - barre is still working great for me after four years, so I still keep coming! Also, I can definitely tell the difference when I'm out of town or otherwise can't get to barre for a series of several days; I tend to feel slightly "off" and vaguely unhealthy. Then when I finally get back to class, everything feels properly balanced again!
Q; Which of AUXO's Core Values most resonates with you and why?
A: Although I agree with all of AUXO's core values, empowerment really resonates with me. I really do find that consistently pursuing fitness, especially in such a supportive environment, has become a pillar of stability in my life. It's one key area of my life that AUXO has made easy to keep "in order," which increases my sense of confidence and self-efficacy in all of the other areas of my life.
Q: Is there anything you would like to share with potential new clients about your experience at AUXO Fitness? Any helpful tips for those who are considering trying Barre, but are nervous?
A: It's important to know that it will probably take a few classes to start getting used to some of the moves and to become familiar with the cues from the instructors. However, once you get those few basics down, you'll be able to focus on REALLY working all of your muscle groups and building upon your personal level of fitness. But even when it's all brand new, you don't have to worry about hurting yourself because it's low-impact. Also, AUXO is the most welcoming workout environment I have ever experienced - so come join us!! :)
