Meet our April Barre Star, Amber C.!
Amber has taken over 150 classes at AUXO Fitness since starting with us in October. She is diligent in taking advantage of several of our different formats, including Pilates, Barre, and Barre-Bata. Way to work hard, Amber!
1) Where are you from, and how long have you been in Gainesville?
I am originally from Wilkes-Barre, PA, and for the past four years I lived in Baltimore, MD for pharmacy school. I moved to Gainesville in July 2016 (8 months ago).
2) What’s your favorite Barre-themed shirt?
“Will barre for wine” (my two favorite things in one shirt!)
3) Tell us something fun about yourself/what you do when you’re not at Barre?
Since I moved to Gainesville, I adopted a Chihuahua mix named Penny. Penny and I love watching Grey’s Anatomy and having dance parties at home together… sometimes I wonder if bring your dog to Barre could be a thing. I’ve been a Tone It Up girl (awesome online blog) since 2013, and I love trying new workouts and recipes to help refuel after Barre.
4) Was your first Barre class what you expected?
My first Barre class exceeded my expectations. In Baltimore I practiced Barre frequently at a different chain studio, so I was familiar with the workout style and had an expectation of what the social dynamic would be like. I was expecting to tone for an hour and attempt to “blend in” to the best of my ability. I was not expecting the feeling of community and the amount of fun that Barre has brought into my life from day one. I was warmly welcomed, the instructor introduced herself to me, and by class two even the owner knew my name! I felt like I belonged at AUXO Fitness and was a part of something fun right from the start!
5) Why did you decide to continue with Barre Forte after your free week by investing in an unlimited membership?
Being new to Gainesville I didn’t know anyone. I left all of my family and friends up north. When I found AUXO Fitness I was honestly just looking for a place to get my sweat on. Instead, I found a group of positive women that welcomed me into their Barre tribe. AUXO became a place I can go to de-stress and have fun. Suddenly I stopped feeling so alone in Gainesville, and people outside of the Starbucks barista and my coworkers knew my name in my new hometown. There is something empowering about being surrounded by other strong women and encouraging one another, and I knew I needed to become a #BarreBabe immediately after that first class.
6) What makes this workout different from other exercises you have experienced?
Definitely the community feeling is unique to AUXO Fitness. I have always been the person trying to “blend in” during a workout class. I was just worried about getting into the class and looking like I belonged. At AUXO, the environment is very nonjudgmental and motivating. I never worried about looking foolish or comparing myself to others. The studio truly allows me to “meet my best” each and every class.
7) What is your favorite Barre (or Pilates/Barre-bata) move so far? Why?
I can’t pick just one! I have to say burpees in Barre-bata. I love chasing a number and counting how many I can get in within that small 20 second window (although when doing burpees it feels so much longer!). My favorite Pilate’s move is the “swan dive”. The first time I saw Sylvia do this move, I could not get over how beautiful and swan-like she looked. Then, I tried and I looked much less graceful (more like a dead bug). I’ve been working on it and each time I try it gets a little more “Sylvia-like”.
8) What results have you noticed so far?
I have noticed my entire body tone and tighten (from head to toe). I found that thanks to Pilates my core is much stronger. Barre-bata has significantly increased my hunger and allowed me to torch calories long after class has ended. I gained a better awareness of my body. I feel when my posture is out of line, and when performing daily tasks I catch myself tucking throughout the day—breaking into Barre moves whenever the spirit moves me.
9) Have you experienced any benefits from Barre that have affected you not just physically, but mentally, too?
Being new to town I was definitely homesick and felt like I had no friends here. At home my best friends (shout out to: Lyss, Jaclyn and Shauna) would do Tone it Up workouts with me at the gym or in our living rooms. Being that I left them all up north, I was hitting the gym alone and really felt that void everyday. Since I joined AUXO Fitness I have gained a sense of belonging. I feel like I’m a part of something bigger than just working out alone. I find myself wanting to get to bed earlier to get to class earlier, and I feel surrounded by encouragement.
10) What keeps you motivated to continue coming to Barre so consistently?
I love the sense of accomplishment that I feel after working out. My mind feels clearer after sweating it out. Barre brings about those feelings and adds a sense of purpose. When I go to Barre I know fellow Barre babes are going to be around me pushing me. Seeing other ladies nail moves makes me want to chase that goal too. Their positivity is contagious and empowering. Seeing posts on Instagram about upcoming events or previous classes makes me excited to get into the studio and join in!
11) Is there anything you would like to share about your experience at AUXO Fitness?
If anyone were to be uncertain about coming to Barre, I would want them to know that AUXO Fitness is the right fit for anyone. Whether you are new to fitness, or if you’ve been active your entire life. Drop the worry and just get into a class; you won’t be disappointed. You will get the most out of this workout. It will challenge you, change you, and you will meet great powerful women along the way! Pretty soon you’ll be chasing that uplifting feeling all the way to the 100 Club, and all of those that interact with you will be wondering why you’re glowing!
Finding this studio was instrumental in creating my new sense of home and happiness here in Gainesville. I am so happy I joined and look forward to growing here in the future!
